Setting up a 3CX SIP trunk: adding a SMS Conecta number as a generic SIP trunk

Short answer: Adding a SIP trunk in 3CX means opening the admin settings, going to Voice & Chat, choosing Add Trunk and selecting a generic VoIP provider. Enter sip.smsconecta.com as the registrar, your number's SIP username and password as the authentication ID and password, set the main trunk number to your SMS Conecta number, and then build inbound and outbound rules.

3CX treats any standards-compliant SIP account as a generic trunk, so a real SMS Conecta number plugs straight in without needing special templates. This page runs through the fields, the routing rules and fixes for the problems people run into most often.

What you need before starting

  • A SMS Conecta number (mobile, local or toll-free) from any of 181 countries. Every number comes with unlimited incoming calls, 1,000 outgoing minutes monthly and its own SIP credentials.
  • That number's SIP username and password, visible on its page inside the SMS Conecta dashboard.
  • A 3CX system, self-hosted or hosted, plus an admin login. Some hosted 3CX editions limit which trunk types can be added, so check your plan if the generic option is nowhere to be found.
  • Outbound access from the 3CX server to sip.smsconecta.com over port 5060 (UDP/TCP) or 5061 (TLS), along with your normal RTP port range.

SMS Conecta settings for 3CX

These are the only values 3CX needs from our side. Since every number carries its own username and password, adding several numbers means adding one trunk per number, or asking support how to group them together.

Step-by-step: adding the SIP trunk in 3CX

The menu names below track 3CX's own V20 documentation as of September 2026. The admin area in V20 sits behind the cog icon in the web client, while older V18 systems have a separate management console with its own SIP Trunks menu instead. Where a label on your screen looks different, look for whatever field serves the same purpose.

  1. Sign in to 3CX with an administrator account and open the admin settings (the cog icon in V20).
  2. Navigate to Voice & Chat and select Add Trunk.
  3. Choose Generic for country, and for provider select the generic VoIP provider / generic SIP trunk template.
  4. Type your SMS Conecta number in international format as the main trunk number.
  5. Point the registrar or SIP server field at sip.smsconecta.com with port 5060. Switch to port 5061 instead if your 3CX build lets you configure TLS for the trunk.
  6. Select register/account based authentication, entering <SIP_USERNAME> as the Authentication ID and <SIP_PASSWORD> as the Authentication Password.
  7. Within the codec list, keep PCMU (G.711 µ-law) and PCMA (G.711 A-law) ranked first; strip out codecs SMS Conecta doesn't offer wherever 3CX allows it.
  8. Add your number to the trunk's DID list, save your work, and wait for the trunk status to turn green (registered).

Inbound routing: sending the DID to an extension or queue

Calls to your SMS Conecta number arrive carrying that number itself as the DID. Inside 3CX, open the inbound rules section, build a rule for the DID <YOUR_NUMBER>, and pick destinations for office hours as well as outside office hours, like an extension, ring group or IVR on your PBX.

When calls reach the trunk yet land on the default route, the rule's DID doesn't match what actually arrives. Compare the number format shown in 3CX's call log (with or without a leading plus and country code) and adjust the rule accordingly.

Outbound calls and caller ID

Build an outbound rule sending your chosen dialing pattern (numbers starting with + or 00, for instance) to the new trunk. Strip or prepend digits so the dialed number exits 3CX in full international format.

Set outbound caller ID, either on the trunk or per extension, to your SMS Conecta number, matching whichever number owns that trunk's SIP credentials. Outgoing calls draw from the number's 1,000 included minutes each month.

Troubleshooting 3CX and SMS Conecta

  • 401 Unauthorized or 403 Forbidden: the Authentication ID or password is incorrect, or has stray spaces copied in. Re-copy both from the dashboard and verify the registrar reads exactly sip.smsconecta.com.
  • Trunk stays red: the server can't reach port 5060/5061. Check the host firewall plus any upstream firewall, and run 3CX's own firewall checker if your edition has one.
  • One-way or missing audio: usually NAT-related. Confirm 3CX's public IP is set correctly and the RTP port range is forwarded to the PBX; switch off SIP ALG on the router.
  • Call fails with 488 Not Acceptable Here: a codec mismatch. Keep PCMU and PCMA enabled on the trunk.
  • IVR menus don't react to key presses: set DTMF to RFC 2833 on the trunk, trying SIP INFO only if the far end requires it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a SMS Conecta number serve as a 3CX SIP trunk?

Yes. SMS Conecta works with any SIP-compliant system, and 3CX's generic provider template takes the server, username and password straight from your dashboard.

Which port does 3CX need?

Go with 5060 over UDP or TCP, switching to 5061 only if the trunk is configured for TLS.

Is one trunk per number required?

Since each SMS Conecta number has its own SIP username and password, the simplest approach is one trunk per number.

How many outgoing minutes come through 3CX?

Each number includes 1,000 outgoing minutes and 500 outgoing SMS monthly, on top of unlimited incoming calls and SMS.

Can 3CX record calls over this trunk?

Call recording isn't part of the SMS Conecta service. Any recording would be a capability of your own PBX, governed by its settings and local law.

Can emergency services be reached through the trunk?

No. SMS Conecta numbers do not support emergency calls, so keep a separate line available for emergencies.
